A group of seven alleged members of German left-wing extremist group stand trial over series of violent incidents

A group of seven people allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group the Antifa Ost network began their trial on Tuesday, accused for violent actions against far-right activists that resulted in the moniker “the hammer group”.

Global terror listing and prosecution case

Earlier this month, the United States classified the organization as a terrorist organization along with several other European far-left and anarchist networks.

Authorities in Germany state the network was responsible for attacks on locations in Germany and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose venue reportedly served as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are allegedly accused of using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several with serious injuries.

Court proceedings and cross-border allegations

The trial involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the city of Dresden. A pair of suspects, identified as Johann G. and Paul M., also face charges for attacks in Budapest during early 2023, around an yearly gathering known as the “day of honour” that draws rightwing extremists from across Europe.

In a related case, a different German individual, Maja T, is currently on trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted assault against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the same rally in that year.

Historical background and organizational structure

The former East Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the frequently radical antifascist groups that counter them.

Authorities characterize Johann G as a high-ranking member within Antifa Ost, responsible for planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Alongside Paul M, he is accused of organizing instruction courses where leftwing extremists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. At depots overseen by Paul M, the group allegedly accumulated tools, irritant sprays, concealment items and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and international reactions

Another militant previously active with the group, Lina E, became a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting presumed far-right targets.

The US designation renders organization affiliates barred from entering the United States, freezes any assets they could possess within the world’s largest economy and makes it illegal offering assistance to them.

Germany's far-right AfD party applauded the American move and urged the German administration to follow suit. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office merely commented it had “acknowledged” of the US designation.

“The danger from the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. The ringleaders and most aggressive participants have either received convictions or are in custody.”
