The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US on five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were central to campaigns to introduce laws governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and European institutions.
