Thomas Tuchel Desires Bellingham's Fire So Long As England's Star Leaves Egotism Outside.

A single omission was enough. A second one and it could have seemed vindictive from Thomas Tuchel, who is extremely shrewd not to understand that securing World Cup glory demands the involvement of Jude Bellingham, although it is equally Bellingham's responsibility to blend into the game plans and player rankings necessary with England now that he is back in Tuchel's welcoming fold.

Tuchel wants the player's competitive fire, his fire, but it is about channeling it in the right way. Skill counts but England have learned the hard way that there is a price to pay when celebrity prevails. Nevertheless, a point has been made.

The midfielder had plenty to reflect on after his omission of the recent team selection. He watched the national side secure their spot at the tournament without him. He saw Morgan Rogers perform brilliantly as a high-pressing No 10. He heard Tuchel discuss loving the group’s energy and values. Inevitably, he has reacted in champion style, netting important strikes for his club versus their rivals and Juventus. He had to be picked; another omission would have put his tournament chances precarious.

The expectation is that the manager will have a midfielder directed towards frightening rivals rather than teammates. Ultimately, from a tactical perspective, there is no value to starting a conflict with a top talent in the world. The best outcome is that Bellingham’s time not playing has made him realize that an international career is a precious, uncertain thing. The coach, on his side, can now provide cover for the youngster after demonstrating that he is not afraid to make big calls.

“No issue exists with him, there is no problem about his personality,” Tuchel commented. “Bellingham possesses that aggression. It takes a sharp mentality to achieve greatness that he has. We all need to support him and build a setting which he can channel that intensity towards opponents and for the objectives we are striving for as a team.”

The star took up the spotlight at the team news conference for the upcoming meaningless matches against Serbia and the other. Any other news? Indeed, what about another talent? This is a further gifted No 10 requiring support and direction. He has been absent for the national team since March and has struggled to hit the heights this year but Tuchel could not ignore the player after his display in Manchester City’s win against Borussia Dortmund recently.

The issue, however, is how to use the various creators at England’s disposal. Morgan Rogers and Eberechi Eze deserve their spots and there will be a good argument to select another youngster once he is fit after a ongoing injury. Would taking multiple creators to the World Cup be excessive? The previous manager failed to discover the correct balance at the European Championship. He compromised by squeezing both stars into the same XI, restricting the captain's game in the process.

It seems unlikely the current manager repeating that if it disrupts the attacking balance. Space exists for a single playmaker, with speedy wingers on the flanks. Clarity is beneficial. He is in as a central attacker. Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, selected for the first occasion, is a No 8 and the returning Adam Wharton will vie with Elliot Anderson as a defensive midfielder. Additionally, there is no position on the wing for the City star, who has to be through the middle. Tuchel prefers him near the striker. “It is illogical to tell Phil: ‘We want you in the team but there’s no space in your preferred role, could you fill in at the left side? Can you play other flank?’” he stated. “Phil is to feature in the No 9-10ish position, in the middle of the pitch. I've long had this vision regarding him for years. I think it fits his style the most.”

He conceded there are occasions when Foden has appeared uncomfortable in an England shirt. “You feel almost like, ‘Is he truly happy? And someone of his caliber who has such natural delight to play football, then clearly something is not right, be it his role, the setup, I don’t know.

“In my opinion he is also so used to playing for Man City in a specific system, to have a clear task. I think he benefits greatly from clarity. Where do you want me to be? In which positions am I to receive the ball? Where am I supposed to accelerate the match? Where do I have to defensive duties?”

Tuchel discussed Bellingham bursting through for easy finishes and the other netting strikes from 18 yards. He added he has a longlist of many candidates. Several players, Myles Lewis-Skelly, James Trafford and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have been omitted. A new face is recognized for his fine form for City at left-back. Interest is high.

The omission of the striker means there is no like-for-like alternative for Kane in the selection. Fascinatingly, Tuchel hinted at deploying the playmaker as a deep-lying striker versus Serbia or the other. Other options, the United forward, Bellingham and the winger are other options if he be absent. With qualification secured, this is an opportunity for trying new things.

At the same time, it is also a chance to foster the understanding with his teammate flowing. It's surprising that you have to go back to Bellingham setting up Kane to net in an international match against Scotland in over a year ago to find the one and only time in 35 games for the national team when the pair combined for a goal. Tuchel will know that Kane and Bellingham only passed to each other once during England’s draws with one opponent and Slovenia at the Euros. The connection is lacking.

“This is where at some point it falls to the responsibility of the players,” he stated. He is not afraid to be blunt. Remains a feeling of Bellingham being on trial. He may not be guaranteed to begin versus Serbia and Albania. The manager desires him onside but he will be observing him carefully. Leave self-importance at the door. It will make a powerful England team into an even better one.
